chorionic villus sampling is usually done between 10 - 12 weeks and takes part of hte developing placenta to look for chromosomal problems in hte baby. It is a form of genetic testing, offered to all women who will be >35 at the time of delivery

amniocentesis is another type of genetic testing, done around 16 weeks by withdrawing some of hte fluid around hte baby and again looking at the baby's chromosomes.

Genetic testing is up to you and your SO, snd only you two -- her doc needs to give her the info and the option.

Both amniocentesis and CVS have risks of miscarriage-- about 1/100 for CVS and 1/200 for amnio
