> Jenny, I wish I had more answers for you, but my doctors didn't discover my GD until 30 weeks when an ultrasound to check growth showed a 5 1/2 lb baby. I was throwing up all the time and asked them repeatedly about gD and they blew me off. Please don't worry too much about birth defects, as I understand it and as was the case for me the most common effect on the babies is macrosomia--being fat. My baby was 8 1/2 lb when he was born at 37 weeks. He did have some blood sugar regulation problems right after he was born, but 2 days later he was fine. (I had to take insulin to control my GD--I hope you can avoid that.) Good Luck.
