1st trimester glucose questionsFrom: Alison (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 11 Oct 2000 13:15:13 -0500 (CDT)
Hi, I am wondering about gestational diabetes in the first trimester? I am 9 1/2 wks and have made it past my progesterone bottoming out at 6 wks. My OB (of course out of town this week) referred me to a dietician (for weight control) and prescribed me a glucose meter because my pre-pregnancy fasting insulin level was high normal. The dietician is having me do fasting morning glucose and 1 1/2 hrs post meals. She wants the fasting test <95 and the post meal ones <120. I am doing okay on the fasting, getting 92 - 96, but the post meal ones were varying between 123 - 171. The dietician seemed very concerned and had me cut out anything "pure sweet" (i.e. hot cocoa, syrup, jam & fruit juice) until I can get in to see my OB next week. I can't seem to find any references for the glucose levels in pregnancy, just the diabetes ones, and these levels aren't particularly concerning compared to diabetic guidelines. I am assuming pregnancy guidelines are different? The dietician also mentioned that the GCT (in reference to negative previous pgcy) isn't always accurate? Could my glucose levels be elevated because of the progesterone supplements I am on? (400mg 3x/day vaginally, my blood level is staying about 35 now.) Thanks so much for catering to my paranoia! Alison
