I had a miscarriage, and when I got pregnant 3 mos. later, my doctor had me come in for blood tests to check the hcg levels 4 times over a 2-week period to establish that they were doubling appropriately. Once they reached something around 5,000, they scheduled my first ultrasound, which was at 9 weeks. The ultrasound then confirmed viability with the presence of the heartbeat. Since then, my appts are 4 weeks apart. My first full OB workup was actually at 13 weeks. My dr didn't want to do a workup until the pregnancy looked like it was "out of the woods".

Some doctors do seem to vary a bit in their approach, but your doctor should at least be willing to follow your hcg to ensure things are progressingly normally. An early ultrasound is not needed as long as the hcg is rising as it should, but I know it does provide peace of mind.

take care! acb
