SIDS RISK and flat spots

I have been told to put my son to sleep on his stomach for naps during the day. He is four months old. The reason being is my first son has a severe flat spot(I have been told it is only cosmetic and thank god he has a thick head of hair) and this guy is showing a tendency to flat out. I do this but it makes me so nervous and I can't stop checking him. Is there less risk now at four months and why do my boys tend to flat out? Most babies sleep on their back these days and none of my friends babies developed flat spots. Could it be heriditery? My mom has a slight flat spot too.
