Nancy,

My third baby was born with a midwife at home. A perfect and wonderful delivery (I was mere minutes from the hospital, and my first two deliveries had been easy ones, so I wasn't worried.) My fourth was with an OB but in a birthing center attached to the hospital. This was also an excellent experience, though more painful for me due to the baby's posterior presentation and subsequent turning during labor. That hurt! ;-) To combine a midwife with a birthing center sounds like a wonderful way to go. If I wasn't high-risk it's what I'd be doing in a heartbeat.

One of the best things about using a midwife is she stays with you throughout the labor, and doesn't just pop in and out, then handle the delivery at the end. This kind of constant attentiveness really relieves the fears and stresses of labor and delivery, and makes for a better experience all the way around, IMO. That's been my experience, anyway. Of course, you can get that same attention with a good doula if you deliver with an OB. It makes a big difference, I have found. I wonder what would happen if OBs stayed longer with the laboring mom, if it would cut down on c-sections and such.... Of course, with the number of patients an OB carries, he/she'd never sleep, see his/her family, or eat under those circumstances!! :-)

Just my opinion,
