Hi Marie I don't know whether it is MORE important to do one or the other. But TCOYF recommends adding a tenth of a degree per half hour later that you take it. however it also says (rather contradictory) that up to an hour either side will not significantly affect. Like you my weekends are not the same as week days and I was rather alarmed to think I would have to set my bedtimes as much as my temp taking times! But I don't think this will significantly affect your overall pattern. What you MUST do is note on your charts if you had a late night of other things which might affect temp. About alcohol, I asked the fertilityfriend advice team (it's an on-line charting software site) if my temps were erratic because of alcohol. I am not ttc yet and so enjoy a glass of wine or two pretty regularly. They said that this would not be throwing my temps off, but if I went to a party and had 6 drinks then should expect to see a change. Why does it affect temp? not sure, but isn't it a depressant? So will affect blood pressure and metabolism I suppose, though am just guessing. Being wakeful will affect your temp. You must get three hours SLEEP before taking the temp. It says in TCOYF that if you wake up a couple of hours earlier than usual and it's too late for you to get in 3 hours before having to get up, then take temp at the earlier time. If you are only half-asleep you won't get such a clear reading - I have noticed this when sleep is disturbed. Again, take temp, note what time and readjust the temp if you want, and NOTE ON THE CHART that your sleep was disturbed. About re-jigging your temps - I always chart what the temp actually was, then make another mark for the temp that it would have been if I had taken it at the normal time, applying the .1 degree rule. Then use some creative interpretation! The MOST IMPORTANT THING is do not lose sight of the wood for the trees. It is the overall pattern which matters and only time can show this up. Like dieting, making one or two mistakes will not affect the overall result!! I have just read your questions back to myself and would revise my answer to question one. As Toni says make sure you get at least 3 hours sleep then you can assume that it is more important to take temp at same time, rather than after same no. of hours. That's my interpretation anyway for what it's worth. HTH
