There is a bony spine on each side of the pelvic outlet that is the reference for station. These are the bones that you sit on. They are located roughly halfway from the the normal carry position of the fetus to the vaginal outlet. We use a system that runs from -4 (which is where the baby is for most of the pregnancy and corresponds roughly to 4 cm above the spines)to +4, which is the head crowning on the vagina and is roughly 4 cm below the spines. -2 is appropriate for 39 weeks, and shows that there has been some trend toward delivery, but not too much given that this is at least your second delivery. I suspect that you still have some time to go unless you are contracting. The small amount of bleeding would be typical following the cervical exam. In the end, it is the contractions that do it.
