The AFP only measures alpha fetoprotein, while the triple screen measures AFP, hCG and estriol. THe addition of the 2 other tests increases the odds of picking up Down syndrome. The triple screen is done virtually 100% of hte time in the US -- an AFP alone will be done if you had a CVS earlier (becasue that test has already looked for Down syndrome and other chromosomal problems)
