There are 2 protocols for the management of possible GBBS infection of the baby. The first is to culture and most do that. The culture is done at 36 weeks. If done earlier it is inaccurate, because GBBS is there sometimes and not at others. If positive then antibiotis=cs are given in labor. Teh other protocol does no testing but just treats all mothers in labor who are at high risk for GBBS. Both methods have been shown to decrease the incidence of GBBS infection of the newborn from about 1 in 1000 deliveries to 1 in 2000 deliveries.

Ask your Doctor how he handles this when you go in next. RDB
