Re: Leaking some kind of fluid at 30 wks??? reply to tonjaFrom: Tonja (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 30 Aug 2000 22:51:47 -0500 (CDT)
I was referring to the nitrazine test, which simply involves a small strip of paper to which the fluid in question is directly placed on. The color of the paper changes to reflect the PH of the fluid -- if it turns blue, it's thought to be amniotic fluid. The results are instant with this one, so there wouldn't be any lab time involved. There's also something called a "ferning" test that involves a sample of the fluid which is examined under a microscope -- amniotic fluid, when dried, creates a fern-like pattern under the microscope, if I remember correctly. It's possible that they weren't too concerned about the possibility of amniotic fluid leakage in your situation (for a variety of reasons, including the ultrasound) or had a better, possibly more accurate plan to determine the nature of the fluid, but I'm a very strong advocate for intution and remain of the opinion that, if it doesn't "feel" right to you, be seen again. I'm more conservative when it comes to issues like these because I made the mistake of not following my intuition and being my own advocate (when I KNEW in my heart and soul what was going on) after allowing L&D to send me home twice within 2 days, and unfortunately, paid for it shortly thereafter with a 27 week delivery (which took place about 7 hours after the nitrazine test). Again, I don't want to alarm you needlessly - chances are everything is fine and that your caregivers are keeping close tabs on you. But listen to your intution, follow your heart and trust the instinct God gave you and if you truly feel uncomfortable with your diagnosis and want more clarification in terms you can understand, by all means, make another call or a trip. You won't be the first nervous mom (and certainly not the last) to show up at L&D for no reason, but peace of mind is invaluable when it comes to issues like these that involve the health of you and your little one. I hope some of that helps just a little. Best of luck to you and let us know what you decide.... Tonja
