The loss of the mucus plug is not always accompanied by blood (neither of mine were), but it also isn't an indication that labor is right around the corner. Some women can lose their plugs many weeks before delivery and others only days. If your friend is worried, by all means, she should call her OB and communicate her concerns with him/her and be seen as soon as possible, if for nothing else, to allay her anxiety.

If it were me, and the contractions continued, I'd make a trip to L&D if my OB couldn't see me right away, but I may be a little on the conservative side of this issue since I've delivered a preemie following very similar circumstances.
