Decidual CastFrom: Anonymous (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 12 Aug 2000 11:08:52 -0500 (CDT)
I am living in Asia where medicine is practised differently to the West and would be very grateful for some information to help me understand about a recent medical problem. One week ago I passed a decidual cast - confirmed by histology, but reported not to show any villi. The background to this was that 7 weeks ago I had an IUCD removed and immediately went onto the combined contraceptive pill, Mercilon, at that time we abstained from intercourse for one week beforeIUCD removal and one week after starting the OCP. I took the first two packs of pills without a break (6 weeks) and 3 days after stopping the pill I passed the cast and then had 5 days of light bleeding. The day I passed it I also performed a home pregnancy test that was negative. I had not missed any periods. My gynaecologist tells me that this was not due to a pregnancy, including an ectopic, because no villi were seen in the histology and I had no pregnancy symptoms or pelvic pain; the most likely reason was taking the OCP for 2 packs without a break. She also said that it was possible, although uncommon, to pass a decidual cast in a normal menstrual cycle. I feel confused by this explanation as I thought that decidual reaction was part of pregnancy. Is it likely that I was pregnant or possible that I could have had an ectopic without any pain? Is it possible to pass a decidual cast without having been pregnant and how could this happen? I have had 2 normal pregnancies, no miscarriages or ectopics in the past.. Thankyou for your help.
