Re: Prednisone During Pregnacy?

I have been taking prednisone pretty regularly for severe sinus headaches [I had surgery 5 years ago and apparently I have significant scarring which blocks the opening and prednisone has been the only thing to relieve the pain, I will need surgery to correct this after the baby is born]

Anyway I start with 6 5mg tablets and taper it starting the next day, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. I started having to take this at 17 1/2 weeks. In the beginning I was able to be off it for about two weeks and then start but by 27 weeks I would end one taper dosage and have to start two days later.

I've been seeing the head perinatologist at Beth Israel in Boston and she told me that prednisone is perfectly o.k. to take during pregnancy, that is DOES NOT cross the placenta. THe only concern is that if taken constantly it can elevate your blood sugars.

In addition to the glucola at 23 1/2 weeks [I took it earlier because I'd been on prednisone so constantly] I also took a two hour post-prandial at 32 weeks. Both were o.k. although the second test was higher, my first had been quite low.

The other thing that I will need to have are "stess steroids" during labor because my body may not be able to mfg. enough.

I was very worried about taking it but the alternative was sinus surgery while pregnant....which my ob did not consider an alternative unless the prednisone stopped working which it hasn't.

Good Luck, Ann-Marie
