Standard of Care for Gestational DiabetesFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 4 Aug 2000 14:40:24 -0500 (CDT)
I am 32 weeks pregnant and was diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes a week ago. For the last week I have been monitoring my glucose levels and my fasting ones have been fine, but my after eating glucose levels have always been between 130 and 150. I go back to the doctor on Tuesday and my question is: Does this mean that I will have to take insulin? My diabetes is most likely caused by my the fact that I take prednisone because I have no other risk factors or indications. (I have had hyperemisis for the last 12 weeks and have gained a total of 11 pounds. I was not overweight to begin with and I am only 24.) How serious is it for my levels to be where they are? I know that exercise is supposed to help, but I am at risk for preterm labor and my contractions become almost unbearable at night time. (Walking makes them worse). Other than only eating 2 servings of carbs per meal--is there anything else I can do to lower my sugar? Thank you in advance for your help.
