Rumor has it that female-producing (X) sperm survive at a much higher rate than male-producing (Y) sperm in an acidic environment. According to Dr. Shettles (the creator of "The Shettles Method" of choosing the sex of a baby), the Y-bearing sperm (female) are "hardier" (and bigger, live longer, etc.) than the X-bearing sperm (faster, but not as hardy, etc.) and are more much more resistent to stress (such as an acidic cervical fluid). According to his method, the female sperm will most likely be the one to make it to and fertilize the egg if intercourse takes place a few days *before* ovulation, because cervical secretions are much more acidic at this point and the male sperm don't have a chance in it! :-) On the same level, the male sperm will most likely be the winner if intercourse takes place much closer to ovulation, because they're faster and the environment is friendlier at that time. Whether his sex-choosing method has any real scientific significance or not, it's actually a pretty interesting book and has a lot of great information on ovulation, BBTs and timing tips for conception.
