There are a lot of good reasons to become a midwife. Most deliveries are straightforward and uncomplicated, so a doc really isn't always needed, though most women do feel safer with a doc. One factor that may go against MW is a chnage in the insurance industry, as they are conspiring (oops, a misquote?!) to have midlevel medical providers to be paid at a lower scale than physicians, although MD backup is aplways necessary. This will possibly result in more difficulty in getting a job and also a decreasing payscale. Like all medical professions, it is a calling as well as profession. If you are strongly thinking of it, you will probably pursue it. Good luck.
