in my state midwifery as a profession is very nearly obsolete for this very reason. adn from what i can tell from home birth forums i vist this is the case in many other areas where midwives work underground or not at all due to lack of medical support from area doctors.

certified-nurse midwives who choose to attend hospital births are only now beginning to surface in my state and even they are few and far between. i have no idea on this one why that is as i have not studied that part of midwifery in my area.
