i dont really agree with you that doctors see midwives who perform home births as competition. for one thing our society has managed to so instill fear of birth in women that at this point the majority of women simply will not consider a home birth. while for a few doctors competition is a reason,i believe there are several reasons why some doctors do not support home birth. i monitor the professional list here at ob-gyn for my own education as an aspiring midwife. there are some doctors who truly fear birth. they are certain that if the interventions are not performed or a trained ob is not around something will go drastically and horribly wrong. there are other doctors who truly believe these interventions are entirely necessary and will never recognize that those very intervention help lead to problems. there are those doctors who belive they HAVE do 'do' birth in 'this' way due to the fear of malpractice lawsuits and/or requirements by hospitals or malpractice infurance. i, personally, can see a certain truth to this one. we live in a society that not only resfuses to take responsibility for itself, but also feels the need find someone to blame who has to pay when things go badly. and then there are those few doctors who will not keep themselves up-to-date or refuse to believe the data that exists against their interventions.

i am sure there are other reasons. what i am trying to say is that the reasons doctors refuse to support home birth are as varied as the doctors themselves. despite the fact that every reputable study i have seen demonstrates that attended home birth is as safe if not safer than hospital birth, doctors will continue to refuse to support home birth for a very long time, and society itself will do the same thing. after all how many years has it taken to ingrain our society with the fear of birth?
