Preterm contractionsFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat, 22 Jul 2000 22:16:47 -0500 (CDT)
I am 30 wks and went into L&D today for contractions that had been coming constantly for 24 hours. They confirmed that I was having contractions every 2 to 6 minutes (averaging every 3 minutes and extremely painful) for the 3 hours I was hooked up. My cervix was a fingertip dialated and didn't change in the time I was there. They cave me two choices: admission for IM morphine or home with seconal sp?. I chose to go home and try the medicine. My question: is this standard procedure for preterm contractions? Would it have been better for me to stay in the hospital? I know it's not labor because my cervix didn't change, but contractions every 3 minutes seems a little excessive to me. My doctor didn't tell me to stay off my feet or anything. What happens when the seconal wears off? Thank you for any input you can give. It seemed really weird to me that they let me decide whether or not to go home and I'd never heard of giving narcotics to stop contractions.
