Contractions (Braxton-Hicks or not, that is another issue) are generally normal in early pregnancy. They become abnormal when one has 4 or more contractions an hour for two hours in a row. If a pregnant woman between 18 and 35 weeks has 4 contractions an hour, 2 hours in a row, she should see her physician befroe the third hour expires because thsi could be labor.

Braxton-Hicks contractions as described by Sir John Braxton-Hicks in the 1600's(as a pregnancy test by the way) are PAINLESS uterine contractions. Uterine contractions if coming close enough together can cause labor whether or not the contractions are painful or painless.
