Low PotassiumFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 18 Jul 2000 10:56:05 -0500 (CDT)
I have had hyperemisis since week 22 and am now 29 weeks. It is sort of under control (no gain, but no loss) Since the weekend, I have had a pins and needles sensation in my hands and feet, so Monday morning I called my rheumatologist (I have SLE) and he checked me out and sent me for blood work to check my electrolytes. It turns out that I have EXTREMELY low potassium. Is this a normal part of pregnancy or a normal side effect of hyperemisis? My rheumatologist has me taking a large dose of potassium and is retesting today to make sure it went up. Is it safe to take a potassium supplements when pregnant? It's postassium chloride. What are the effects of having too low a level of potassium? This is so strange to me. I have gotten good advice from this board before and thank you in advance for your help. One other question, should my OB or rheumatologist routinely be checking my electrolyte levels to make sure something like this doesn't happen again?
