Painful ExamFrom: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 14 Jul 2000 14:16:38 -0500 (CDT)
I am 29 weeks. I went into L&D yesterday because of frequent contractions and bleeding. They did a speculum exam which was one of the most painful experiences of my life. I felt like the speculum was cutting me and tearing me. It hurt so much I was hysterical. I have had plenty of pelvic exams in my life and none of them have ever made me hurt like this one. My question is why? I have noticed that my vulvar region seems swollen, but I thought this was a normal part of pregnancy. Could the swelling have caused the painful exam or was it the doctor? The head resident asked me if this pain was new and I said yes, but he didn't comment any further. Is it normal to have pelvic exams become incredibly painful during pregnancy? I think I may have had a contraction during the exam as well. Could that have made it more painful? I am now terrified of trying to deliver a baby if I can't even stand to be examined. Any insights would be greatly appreciated.
