I can give you my experience with this...when I was pregnant with my first child, I experienced "cramping" in the very early stages that very, very closely resembled menstrual cramps. I was convinced that either (1) I was miscarrying or (2) that the pregnancy tests were all wrong and my period was starting any minute! It turned out that mild cramping (and I actually have heard some describe it as "tightening") is perfectly normal during early pregnancy. Nearly everyone experiences it to some degree, so try to relax while you wait for your next appointment (easier said than done, huh?)...a matter of several days can make a difference in what you'll see in an ultrasound, so chances are good that you're worrying needlessly! As far as the ultrasound goes, the earliest one I've ever personally had was at around 7 1/2 weeks. It was a transvaginal U/S and at that time, we were able to see the heartbeat. As a general rule, the gestational sac (which will look like a very small dark "ring") can typically be seen as early as 4 1/2 weeks and the yolk sac (which will resemble a lighter grey-scaled "dot" in the center of the gestational sac) as early as 5 weeks, so your U/S may have been a bit early or your dates may be off by a few days. Try to relax and take care of yourself and, as tough as it may be (especially given the fact you've waited for this baby for a while), don't go looking for trouble! :-) Congrats again and good luck with your upcoming appointment!
