Re: Amniosentesis.....????

Amy,

I had two amnios done. One was at 17 weeks and, just my luck, the baby was uncooperative (would you believe that she would put her foot over the catheter preventing the draw?). At that amnio, I had two sticks. One went thru the uterine wall, but didn't enter the amniotic sac (baby flipped and ended up with her head close to the needle...THAT'S why they do an US at the same time!), the second was the foot action.

I went back at 22 weeks and had it repeated without a problem. My suggestion, IF you do go thru with it, is to take deep breaths, TRY really hard to relax (think about it...things ALWAYS hurt more when you're tense), close your eyes and think of "nice things". Anything to get your mind off of things. Personally, I thought the anticipation was worse than the test itself. It was like a brief sharp pinch then it was pressure. That was it. Of course, that was MY experience and I'm sure others have different ones. The real key is to be relaxed.

Feel free to e-mail me if you have any more questions. Of course, I can only give you MY experience...for whatever that's worth ;-)
