It is not a BIG needle. It is the same size needle that most injections are given with. It is just a little longer thna the other one. SOme physicians inject local and others do not. Several years ago, some studies were done and they found that not injecting local was the least painful. Amniocentesis should be done while observing the entry of the needle on the ultrasound machine. This markedly decreases the incidence of complications. If you are sensitized to "E", I hope you have at least had a consultation with a Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist. There are some recent advances in the management of isoimmunization which have markedly decreased if not eliminated the need for amniocentesis.
