Re: Epidural--Too Numb to Push??From: jwang, M.D. (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 21 Jun 2000 22:19:31 -0500 (CDT)
Epidurals have been and are still studied to determine if they have a slowing effect on labor, adversely effect pushing, an increase in the c-section rate. The anesthesiologists say it does not have any adverse effects, while some ob's say it does. What it boils down to is how good an epidural it is. A good epidural will block the pain and only slightly affect muscle strength. A "heavy" epidural will act almost like a spinal and the patient won't feel or move anything below her bellybutton. For the most part, epidurals are very helpful in easing the pains of labor, and most ob's don't have an objection to them.
