Retained Placenta

I would like some information about retained placenta. I am pregnant with my second child and am concerned about having a retained placenta again. With my first pregnancy I had slightly elevated blood pressure (140/90) and was made to lie down on my left side with a magnesium drip once I was admitted to the hospital. My daughter was born without any pain medication, with vacuum extraction after almost three hours of pushing. I breastfed immediately, but was told that I had a retained placenta and they had to go in and manually extract it. After the first attempt and much screaming on my part, they gave me intravenous nubain and went in and extracted it. I then had hemorrhaging resulting in a blood loss of 40% of blood volume. As I understand it, my mother had similar problems on her second and third pregnancies, with the second pregnancy resulting in uterus prolapse. Obviously, this concerns me and I'd like some more information on how I could prevent this from happening again. Any suggestions?
