Ultrasounds per Dr. Montgomery. Please respond MDs on forum

In a previous post I noticed that Dr. Montogomery had responded to a patients question about US and the time that she had it. She stated she was at 18 weeks and had said the tech said that it was too early. Is that too early? If so, why would my MD schedule me for a detailed sonagram at 16 weeks to discover details along with the timing of the AFP test that I am electing to take? Would it be better for me to have the US at a later date. (or another one for things such as sex determination, segmental measurements, heart development etc) I understood that I needed to have the AFP at time period that was very specific but had not heard the same about US. Please inform me more about when and what to expect from US and what you or other MDs who post to this forum determine are reasonable times that a patient with a healthy pregnancy (such as myself) should have an US for milestones or discoveries? By the way, I will be having that 16 week US tomorrow.

Thanks much.
