Bleeding during labor...

This is one of those things that has been in the back of my mind for a while, but never thought to ask.

When I went into labor with my last baby, I started having heavy bleeding (like a period) right before I went to the hospital. That was actually part of what convinced me I needed to go ahead and go. I had been having the pinkish bloody show for a while which I had attributed to the vaginal exam I had a couple hours earlier, but it changed to actual bleeding. I was 5cm dilated when I got to the hospital and still bleeding. There didn't seem to be any concern about the bleeding during the labor and delivery and the FHR did fine throughout. However, in the post-delivery haze, I seem to recall the doctor pointing out part of the placenta to the nurse and saying something about it being torn or detached. I was a little foggy, so I didn't get it all. I asked my OB about it at my post-partum followup and he didn't have anything about it in his notes.

Is this type of bleeding common in early labor? Or was the bleeding more likely from the placenta?

All is well and baby is fine, but I was just curious.

Andrea
