Re: is it his child?From: AMD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 30 May 2000 13:30:58 -0500 (CDT)
This isn't a medical opinion at all, but I thought I would also add that it would be in everyone's best interest to conclusively determine paternity. If he continues to voluntarily support the child, this could be construed as an "assumption of paternity" in the event that the issue ever went to court -- even if DNA tests prove otherwise. I know it sounds crazy, but it happens. By supporting the child now, he could end up with the legal obligation even if later testing concludes he is not the biological father. I don't know if the two of you have long term plans, but I would certainly want to be sure that my boyfriend or husband was the father of the child before "we" got roped into paying a lifetime of child support. Any way you look at it, this money will not be available to his future wife and family if it is court-ordered child support. Also, if he is the father, it will probably be in his best interest to get an official agreement regarding child support and visitation. These "informal" arrangements frequently backfire as time goes on. I admire him for being responsible, and if the baby is his I certainly hope he continues. Good luck. Andrea
