Thank you. 1 mg is almost certainly more than you need, unless you have a strong family history of spina bifida, but it is not likely to harm you. Folate is a water soluable vitamin, which means that you cannot store very much, and any exess is simply lost in your urine. It is not necessary to take supplemental folate if you get enough in your diet, but the trick is knowing if you are getting enough in your diet.
