I have been in private practice for 16 years with 4 years of residency before this, and I can tell you that I have seen this once or twice in my life as an OBGYN. True, it does not happen often, but I have encountered similar situations every year or two (maybe not quite as severe as you have stated, but similar circumstances). It sounds to me as if the doctors did a good job saving your life and your reproductive potential. If you want to read more about this, do a search for 'placenta accreta'. Hope this helps.
