Hi Janice, My understanding was that it IS possible to buy private insurance in Ireland. My surgeon saw me as a public patient, but he also ran a clinic where patients were seen very quickly and charge a great deal. The other thing we don't have in the US is walk-in offices -- I saw a great many of these in Ireland, and had occasion to use them. US patients need appointments and usually far in advance. The unfortunate situation is that there is no system in the US -- rather, it's catch as catch can. I was in graduate school in the US when my cyst was discovered. I was told that same day to drop out of school and apply for medicaid (or medicare?), as the cyst was in a dangerous location, extremely large, and potentially life threatening. I didn't choose that option but let the cyst continue to grow until the following year, when I was in Ireland. The whole approach of every health care provider I saw in Ireland was tbat they had better get it taken care of, and quickly, as I was American and wouldn't recieve consistant care in my own country. By the way, my opinion before this incident was that I had better not get sick in Ireland since medicine was so far behind the times! Val
