Types of stiches/staplesFrom: Valerie (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 26 May 2000 20:49:50 -0400
Just a question to spark some discussion. I had an ovarian cystectomy in Ireland in '94. When I awoke it was to find a single hidden stich in my 11 inch incision (massive dermoid - two surgical opinions) with a small metal ball on each end. All the other women on the ward had a similar stich. Removal was painless and there is absolutely no scar. However, during my gallbladder removal I had staples, which irritated my skin, popped out, and left ugly scars. How/why do surgeons choose which kind of closure to use? Oh, by the way, the medical care I received in Ireland was absolutely excellent. My 6 days in the hospital cost about $120.00 and I had a surgeon who used to teach at our Mayo clinic. My experience with socialized health was marvelous (as was the experience of those among the 20 other Rotary International Ambassadorial Graduate Scholars who also spent that year there who had to seek medical care...)
