Re: aftercare for c-sectionFrom: Claudia Twisdale RN (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri, 26 May 2000 19:17:04 -0500 (CDT)
Pretty much same as with any abdominal surgery: 1st and most important, mom's concern should be for herself and baby, period. You will be able to shower after csection, and I always encouraged my psot op c section moms to get up and shower 1st post op day if they could. Most moms were reluctant to move out of bed at first, as it is an art to movement after surgery. (course this is with OB's OK). You can wash your hair 1st day too if you want (again depends on OB's OK) You will be encouraged to get up and move as much as possible. Usually you will start with clear liquid diet and and advance as tolerated. I usually tell moms that first few days go kinda like this: 1st post op day, goal is to be up, get rid of catheter, maybe even IV, walk as much as possible, or even rock in rocking chair (helps with gas) 2nd post op day usually gas day, bowels waking up, gas starts moving (hopefully) make sure to tell OB if problems with gas. Many moms are going home on day 2. If you go home with staples, You will return to office in a few days and have them removed. No sex, douching, tampons for 4-6 weeks. Most OB's will send mom home with a list of discharge instructions. Round up any help offered. If people say, "can I do anything to help?" Tell them yes, send a meal, run a load of clothes etc.
