There is about a 3-4% false positive rate, meaning the results suggest an abnormality when everything is really okay. The incidence of neural tube defects (indicated by a high AFP) in the US is aobut 1:1000. The incidence of Down's syndrom, whre the AFP is low, depends on maternal age. In my experience, the vast majority of abnrmal results are due to problems with dating -- an ultrasound is done, dates are off and when the AFP is recalculated, the results are normal. Do you recommend the test to all of your patients? Just curious. We offer it to everyone, and give both written and verbal information, but do not make any recommendations one way or the other -- it is up to the parents to decide if they want the test or not.
