Abruptio placenta causes a sub chorionic hemorrhage, not the other way around. Abruptio placenta is when the placenta separates from the wall of the uterus while the baby is still in the uterus. When this occurs there is bleeding under the chorion, which is layer of the placenta. Other than in some cases where trauma or hypertension lead to abruptio placent, we really don't know its cause.
