Why miscarriage after seeing heartbeat?From: abaxter (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon, 1 May 2000 10:14:12 -0500 (CDT)
I'm still doing a lot of research about miscarriage following my own, which occurred 1 month ago. I was at 9 weeks and had seen the hearbeat 3x. I really appreciate the responses by the physicians who so kindly tolerate these endless, fretful questions! I've read a few times that chances for miscarriage after seeing the heartbeat decline to around 5% or so. I find it hard to believe that I fell into the unlucky 5%! What factors might account for miscarriages that occur when there is a heartbeat? Is it pretty *unlikely* that progesterone played a role since I was on supplements for the previous 3 weeks and had seen the strong heartbeat? Sorry to keep after this topic, but this statistic disturbs me, and I'd like to know as much as possible. Seems like everyone else who miscarries at 9 weeks had a blighted ovum or no heartbeat. My dr offered to do testing on the fetus (in sac) that I brought in to the office, but it was mishandled and lost, confused with another patient's specimen (unbelievable, I know). It was our first pg, so I know they normally wouldn't test anyway. I hope this is my last question on on this topic. . thanks again. acb
