Re: Safety of vacuum extractor used during delivery. From: Christy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue, 4 Apr 2000 20:49:34 -0500 (CDT)
during the Birth of my first baby I had both the vacuum and forceps used because I was exausted from pushing for 3 1/2 hours. first the vacuum didn't work. It popped off my son't head twice and left 2 horrible marks on his head for weeks. The forceps helped deliver him with no problems. I felt that both were necessary to avoid a c section. I believe and others may disagree that both are VERY safe and that they are only used when necessary. My Dr. gave me the option to use them or go ahead with a c section...I am glad I had the choice. By the way, My son was 9lbs. 7oz and his chest was larger then his head which was part of the problem. I went on to give birth to an 8lb. 6oz. baby girl this past October...I pushed for 15 minutes and was told I had to STOP pushing so the Dr. could get there.
