Uterine infections can be caused by a number of things. Any surgical procedure has the potential to cause an infection-it is a risk that accompanies any surgery. The D&C also dilate the cervix making it easier for bacteria to migrate from the vagina to the uterus-bacteria that normally reside in the vagina, can cause an infection in the uterus. As long as the infection is treated appropriately, there should be no concern regarding future fertility. Severe uterine infections can result in a repeat D&C and IV antibiotics. Milder ones can be treated with oral antiboitics.
