Obviously this is difficult to assess in that you can't ask the patient. However, there have been some assessments carried out using indirect measures that have demonstrated that the fetus has the ability to feel pain as early as the early to mid second trimester. This doesn't mean that the fetus can't feel pain before that, its just that we have no way of determining it.
