Is this a serious condition and could this be a sign of tumors or cysts? An enlarged renal pelvis may mean there is a bit of blockage in the ureters or at the junction of ureter to bladder -- of it may mean nothing at all. Sometimes boys have posterior urethral valves which can casue urine to back up into a kidney -- this can be treated at birth if it persists. Usually, if this is found on ultrasound, a repeat scan is done in a few weeks to confirm the finding or you may be referred to a perinatologist for a "level II", or more targeted ultrasound. Tumors owuld be pretty uncommon
