Heartburn and early pregnancy.

I need some suggestions on ways to deal with heartburn in early pregnancy (8 weeks). I experience persistent heartburn daily and it is really bothering me. Is there anything safe to take during pregnancy? My doctor recommended Tums as a calcium supplement, for which I have been taking the recommended dosage of 2 tablets a day. Is it safe to take more than that to try to get rid of my heartburn? It isn't a matter of eating smaller meals, I eat very minimally because of all-day nausea. Please help me because it has become quite painful. Thank you.
