Re: 16 year old soon to be mother(long)From: Rachael (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed, 1 Mar 2000 22:27:17 -0600 (CST)
>You are very fortunate that you were at or near a hospital that could save >your baby. What happened? Hi, Mary. Thanks for asking... If you remember, I'm the assymptomatic GBS woman! My daughter was colonized at birth, needing immediate blood transfusions, surfactant, BP meds, massive ABX, and was intubated for 5 days. She had pneumonia, sepsis, and meningitis (LP puncture indicated meningitis but didn't diagnose for sure). Her Apgars were 8 and 9 but within an hour after birth she was deathly ill. The doctors were very grim, as she went down and down, but then, all the sudden, she started improving! That's the weirdest thing about this infection, one day they're on death's door, the next day, they're taking a bottle! She was in the hospital for 15 days. I had no significant problems with my pregnancy, but did develope PIH in the last few weeks and was induced at 38 weeks. I have a heavy family history of hypertension! An ultrasound the day before my induction revealed a 6-7 pound healthy baby girl. How surprised everyone was when she became ill, as I had no trace of GBS during my pregnancy (my doctor's practice does not swab for this BTW, but my urine was always clear) ran no fever during labor, and my membranes were only ruptured 9 hours. I've never considered a homebirth, so I dont' know what goes into the education of this, but I sincerely hope that some of the education includes info on the local NICU, and what kind of babies are in there, because not all of them are premies. One look at those precious babies hooked up to life support is enough to change your life forever. My daughter at one point had 9 seperate IVs in her. So as you can see, my opinions are heavily weighed down by an intense emotional experience. We thank God every day that the only thing we've had to deal with since she's been home is a few ear infections and presently trying to teach her to sit, not stand, on furniture! :o) BTW... I have to brag, that I pumped and pumped until I was sure my breasts would explode so my baby would get only breastmilk! We had a wonderful 13 month breastfeeding relationship that I still miss...
