Re: to mary.Re: 16 year old soon to be mother, seeks truth of natral child birthFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed, 1 Mar 2000 14:06:22 -0600 (CST)
At the risk of being flamed, I believe that women do have the right to choose where to give birth but that the best choice for safety reasons is the hospital or hospital-birthing center. Every day I put my two young children in car seats (properly installed with teather straps) because of the possiblity of an accident. I don't plan to have an accident and in 16 years of driving have not had one but just in case I put them in their seats. Just like the car seats I think that the back up should be available just in case complications arise during childbirth. I believe we should put our energies towards making the hospital a place that we would want to deliver our children in. That means getting midwives as part of the team, stoping unecessary monitoring, ivs, inductions etc. etc.. We should fight to make the hospital both a safe and welcoming environment. The best way to change the system is not to retreat into our homes but rather educate ourselves and demand from our healthcare providers what we want. I have done this and had two good natural hospital births. But I can tell you it took alot of research, visiting hospitals, interviewing doctors to make it happen (by the way there were some complications with one of my deliveries after a normal healthy pregnancy and labor). Well enough of a soap box, thats just my two cents, Nancy
