Brethine is widely used for treatment of premature labor. It IS NOT FDA approved for this use, but again it is widely used. It was developed for use in asthma patients to help relax constricted airways in the lungs. It is felt that this same type of relaxation physiology works for mom in preterm labor. Of my prof. experience, most moms have a bit of increased pulse and "nervousness" with it, but do OK
