Brethine and premature labor

My daughter is 22 weeks pregnant and having premature contractions daily. Some of it is painful and other times it's just a tightening of the abdomen. Her cervix is thin, but not dilated. They are also treating her for a mild bladder infection. The doctors have put her on Brethine (oral) every four hours while she is awake. How long can she take this drug safely and what are the effects upon the fetus? Thanks so much in advance.
