I had contractions from 20 weeks on my first pregnancy. They didn't become uncomfortable untill the third trimester. Anytime I had more than 5 an hour after the second hour I was ordered into observation and given an IV untill they went away and I was sent home. This happened several times. I was put on bed rest after two nights in observation at 34 weeks. At 36 week I delivered. I was never given anything other than IV untill bed rest when they gave me tributelein(SP). Not sure if that held off or not. I am following same pattern this second time around with the contractions being quite uncomfortable much earlier on. I have not yet had to go into observation and don't look forward to it. Chances are I just have an irritable uterus and that is no predictor of preterm. Just something I have to deal with. Bottom line is don't worry untill after the second hour and drink lots of water. Dehydration can cause preterm.
