Beth,

Most probable reason for the harnia getting sore and hard by evening or afternoon could be ralated to your taking lunch (if it's generally heavy). >It may or may not cause any problem during labor as it's the uterus that contracts more during the early stages than the abdominal muscles. However, during the bearing down period there could be some problem. Second stage is generally short more so in your case as you are multipara.
You must consult your surgeon for further information. Best of Luck Dr.Amit Sengupta, MD; Ph.D. This is for educational purpose only

I am 22 weeks pregnant with my 5th child. I was diagnosed this week with an abdominal hernia and spent 24 hours in the hospital to monitor for infection. As I was put to bed as soon as I arrived, the hernia receeded and I don't believe they got the full understanding of what is going on. When I go to bed at night, the hernia "goes back in". In the early part of the day (say until 1 or 2 in the afternoon) it will only pop out if I cough or sneeze or strain and I can easily push it back in. By late afternoon and evening, however, it comes out and stays out. It gets hard and very sore. Then I just go to bed and the process starts over again. My midwife has referred me to a surgeon for evaluation, but he can't get me in for anther 2 weeks. My question is - what is going to happen during labor? What will the strain do? It frightens me that I have this tear in my abdominal wall and in another 4 months I'm! going to go into labor and put the ultimate pressure on it. Although no one has mentioned a c section, it has entered my mind. My four previous deliveries have been vaginal and I'm not trilled about the idea of a c section. On the other hand, I have this horrid picture of my organs exploding out of my abdomin during delivery and I find that terrifying. Any statistics or info you can share on this?

Beth
